Preparing Your Home for Guests: A 48-Hour Cleaning Plan

Guests are coming and the house is not ready. It happens to everyone. The good news is that visitors notice far fewer things than hosts worry about. This 48-hour plan focuses your effort where it actually shows, so you can welcome people into a home that feels genuinely fresh rather than frantically tidied.

Day One: The Deep Work

Start with the spaces guests will actually use: the living room, the guest bathroom, and the kitchen. These three rooms carry almost the entire impression of your home.

In the bathroom, clean the toilet, sink, mirror, and floor thoroughly, then put out fresh towels and check that soap and tissue are stocked. In the kitchen, clear countertops completely, clean the sink until it shines, and empty the bin. A clear counter and a gleaming sink make a kitchen read as clean even before anyone looks closely.

  • Guest bathroom: toilet, sink, mirror, floor, fresh towels
  • Kitchen: clear counters, shine the sink, empty bins
  • Living room: dust surfaces, vacuum or mop, plump cushions
  • Guest room if applicable: fresh bedding, cleared surfaces, working fan or AC

Day Two: The Finishing Touches

The second day is for details. Walk through your home as if entering for the first time and notice what your eyes land on. Entryways matter disproportionately: sweep the entrance, wipe the door, and clear shoes and clutter from the immediate view.

Then address the senses. Air out the house in the morning, deal with any lingering odours at their source rather than masking them, and check lighting. A home that smells fresh and is well lit feels clean before a single surface is inspected.

What Guests Never Notice

For your own sanity, know what to skip. Guests do not open your wardrobes, inspect inside your oven, or look under beds. The inside of cabinets, the tops of wardrobes, and the garage can wait for your next deep clean. Spend your energy where eyes actually go.

The Shortcut

If the timeline is too tight or you would simply rather spend those two days differently, a one-time professional clean covers this entire list in a single visit. It is one of the most common reasons clients book us, and one of the most satisfying to deliver.

Rather leave it to the professionals?
