The Harmattan Dust Survival Guide: Keeping Your Home Clean Through the Season

Every year, harmattan arrives and with it the fine, relentless dust that settles on every surface of every home in Ghana. You can dust in the morning and watch a fresh film appear by afternoon. You cannot beat harmattan dust entirely, but you can dramatically reduce its impact with the right strategy.

Defence First: Keep the Dust Out

The most effective harmattan cleaning happens at the boundary of your home. Windows and doors are the main entry points, and how you manage them matters more than how often you dust inside.

Keep windows closed during the dustiest parts of the day, typically early morning and late afternoon, and open them briefly mid-morning when the air is clearest if you want ventilation. Check window and door seals; even small gaps admit surprising amounts of dust over a season. A damp towel along a draughty windowsill is a simple, effective stopgap.

  • Close windows during peak dust hours
  • Seal gaps around windows and doors where possible
  • Use doormats at every entrance and clean them weekly
  • Adopt a shoes-off habit at the door during the season

Clean Smarter, Not More Often

During harmattan, dry dusting is your enemy: it lifts dust into the air, where it resettles within hours. Switch to damp dusting instead. A lightly dampened microfibre cloth traps dust and removes it rather than relocating it.

Work top to bottom in every room, and accept a realistic rhythm. Dusting key surfaces every two to three days with a damp cloth beats an exhausting daily dry-dust that accomplishes less. Prioritise the surfaces that matter most: dining tables, bedside tables, electronics, and anything at breathing height in bedrooms.

Protect the Vulnerable Spots

Electronics suffer during harmattan. Dust clogs fans and vents in televisions, computers, and decoders, causing overheating. Wipe exteriors with a dry microfibre cloth and use a soft brush on vents weekly.

Bedding deserves attention too. Dust settles on beds all day, and you breathe it in all night. Washing bedding weekly during harmattan, rather than fortnightly, makes a real difference to sleep quality and morning congestion.

The Post-Harmattan Reset

When the season ends, usually around February or March, your home needs more than a return to normal cleaning. Months of fine dust have worked into curtains, upholstery, carpets, window tracks, and every crevice. This is the single best time of year for a professional deep clean.

A proper post-harmattan deep clean resets your home completely: curtains and upholstery refreshed, windows and tracks cleared, floors scrubbed, and the accumulated film of the season removed from every surface. Many of our clients book it annually now, and their homes feel noticeably different for it.
